Officials hugely underestimated impact of AI datacentres on UK carbon emissions

The Balance That Keeps Climate Stable Is Out of Whack, U.N. Report Finds

That’s the message from a United Nations report released late Sunday that looked at how much energy from the sun is absorbed by the Earth or reflected back into space. US carbon pollution rose in 2025 in reversal of previous years’ reductions

The increase in greenhouse gas emissions is attributable to a combination of a cool winter, the explosive growth of datacenters and cryptocurrency mining, and higher natural gas prices, according to the Rhodium Group, an independent research firm. Environmental policy rollbacks by Donald Trump’s administration were not significant factors in the increase because they were only put in place this year, the study authors said. Heat-trapping gases from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas are the major cause of worsening global warming, scientists say. Carbon Dioxide Levels Jumped by a Record Amount, U.N. Says

That edged out a 3.3 parts per million increase in 2016 that was previously the largest ever measured. Rivers are leaking ancient carbon back into the atmosphere

The finding has taken scientists by surprise and suggests human activities are damaging the natural landscape far more than first thought. They are thought to emit around 2 gigatonnes of this carbon each year.
